Christmas Tradition Around The Planet, How We Celebrate?

Christmas is the day when Christians all over the World commemorate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth and even though the tradition is centuries old, the ways that people celebrated this major holiday are different.

So How is Christmas around the world celebrated?

Countries like South Africa or Australia, Christmas is celebrated quite differently. They go to the beach and do all kind of outdoor activities since most schools are having summer holidays.

But in other part of the planet, a traditional white Christmas is observed. The white Christmas occurs in most part of Europe and most part of the globe such as Britain and America, but the preparations commence as early as from the 6th of the same month, which is Nikolaustag (Saint Nicolas Day). Traditionally, on the eve of St. Nicolas day, children will fill their boots and shoes with carrot and straws and place them outside of their houses. They believe when St. Nicolas passed by their houses, he will feed his horses with the straws and carrots and in return he will put the nuts and apples back to the boots. Christmas in Germany is also marked by houses decorated with advent wreaths, the smell of bratwurst (German sausage), lebkuchen (savory cookies) and Stollen (fruit loaf). The Germans will always do their shopping early so that they can avoid the over-crowded shopping malls and expensive price later on. The prune man, the special item created from dried fruit and nuts is purchased during Christmas celebration in Germany. The kids write letters to Christkind (Christ Child), asking for presents and leave them on their windowsills.

However, how is Christmas celebrated in other parts of our planet? The Chinese Christmas traditions are quite different from what the Europeans and the North Americans are used to. The Christianity in China is a minority religion. But the people that follow it, celebrate the Holy holiday (called Sheng Dan Jie) by decorating their houses with paper lanterns, paper chains, and evergreens. Families that follow the Chinese Christmas traditions put up a Christmas tree called "Tree of Light" and also decorate it with paper flowers, lanterns, and chains. The kids hang up muslin stockings, hoping that Dun Che Lao Ren (the Chinese Santa Claus) will fill them up with wonderful gifts. Tough the Chinese Christmas traditions are followed by relatively small group of people, most of the big cities are decorated during that time of the year and the atmosphere is festive.

Christmas around the world is celebrated in many different ways, the customs and the traditions are different, the food served is of great variety. In some places, where summer is on, the temperature can go as high as 90 degrees in Fahrenheit whereas in some other places, kids will play outside, creating snowmen or crafts. However, this is the time of the year to be with your family, have fun, play games, exchange gifts, and hope for a better tomorrow.
